Depression is a very real psychological disorder that affects numerous people and prevents them from leading a quality life. There is a way to win the battle against depression.
Sadness is something that we all experience sometimes. It is a normal reaction to difficult times in life and usually passes after a certain period. Our mood is changes according to our circumstances, and we all sometimes feel sad and anxious. However, depression is different. It interferes with everyday life and normal functioning, over longer periods of time.
Depression is more common in women than in men. The biological, life-cycle, hormonal and psychosocial factors which are unique to women can be associated with the higher depression rate found in them. For example, women are particularly sensitive to the development of postpartum depression after childbirth, when the hormonal and physical changes combined the new responsibility of caring for a newborn can prove to be too much to handle.
Depression is hard both for the people suffering from it and for those taking care of them. Doctors call this condition “depressive disorder” or “clinical depression”. It’s a real illness, not a sign of weakness or lack of character. Clinical depression cannot be “switched off”, and most people with depression need treatment to win the battle against this serious disorder.
